Mother Feeding a Baby Anna’s Hummingbird in Backyard, March 2013

We noticed a hummingbird nest in the tree above our patio. It had a baby Anna’s Hummingbird. This post has some pictures.

Mary Ann noticed the nest Saturday morning, and it had a baby in it. I tried to take pictures, but the mother kept buzzing me and wouldn’t approach the baby. So I set up the tripod and flash with the 1oo-4oo mm lens, and a wireless to trigger the shutter. You can see the baby hummer is quite large and ready to leave the nest. In fact, it did leave the nest that afternoon. While I was photographing I noticed the mother fly over to the base of a citrus tree about 50 feet from the nest. There was another baby sitting there, and the mother was feeding it also! I got some pictures of the baby sitting on the twig, but not of the mother feeding it.

Here are the pictures:

Right in your back yard! So cool. Great job finding the nest, Mary Ann.
