Wildlife Photograph Contest

The Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) sponsors a photo contest every year. Winning photographs are used on their calendar. The photos must be of wildlife photographed in Arizona. Pets, domestic animals, insects (including butterflies and dragonflies) are not allowed. A contestant can enter at most 3 pictures.

I decided to enter 3 pictures. None of them made it on the calendar, but 2 were selected for ‘honorable mention’. There are 38 total photos selected for honorable mention. They told me it’s pretty good to be selected out of hundreds of photos submitted. My pictures will be published in the Arizona Wildlife View magazine (http://www.azgfd.gov/i_e/pubs/awv_magazine.shtml).

You be the judge. Out of the photos below, which do you think they selected? The answer is below.

Answer: the Verdin and Northern Flicker. I thought if they picked any it would be the Broad-billed Hummingbird. I think it’s very ‘Arizona-ish’, with the cactus, flowers, and hummingbird. However, I suspect they get a lot of Hummingbird pictures.
