I visited the Granite Reef Recreation Area on May 9, 2015. This post has some photos.
I arrived at the GRRA about 7am. It was later than I wanted, but I wasted some time driving around to different Circle K stores trying to find one that sells the Tonto Pass, which is needed to park at the rec area. Next time I’ll know I can get one at Walgreens on Power and Thomas, which is on the way. I bought one at the 7-Eleven just south of Ray on Arizona Avenue. The pass actually has ‘scratch-off’ areas for the date, so I could buy many of them and use them as needed.
The highlight for me was the Black-throated Gray Warbler. There are also a couple of Bullock’s Orioles, which I was told are nesting there. I didn’t get very good pictures of either, but I posted the best I got. I’d like to go back soon and see if I can get better photographs. There was an active Verdin nest. The Verdin kept returning to feed the young. They would come with insects and go into the nest, and then fly out for another trip.

What are the names of each photo, I recognized a monarch butterfly, and a desert bloom. Thx, Mo
Hi Maureen. If you click on a photo you will see a larger version of it, and the names of the bird is in the caption below the photo. I try to identify all birds, butterflies, and dragonflies in pictures that I post. However, I don’t try to identify the flowers.
