Madera Canyon, July 8, 2025

Mary Ann and I made a trip to Sierra Vista in southern Arizona. Our plan was to stop at Madera Canyon on the way there, and go to Huachuca Canyon the next day. The best laid plans … go oft astray. We didn’t make it to Huachuca Canyon, but this post is for our first day at Madera Canyon.

The drive from home to the Santa Rita Lodge in Madera Canyon is about 2.5 hours. We spent some time at the feeders at the lodge, and then hiked the Nature Trail. Most of the pictures are from the feeders. I prefer getting birds in their natural habit rather than at feeders, but I’ll take them as they come! There were lots of hummingbirds there; we saw four species on this trip.

We’ve had good luck on the Nature Trail in the past. On this trip it was a nice hike, but not much opportunity for photographs. By the time we got there it was afternoon and not the best time for pictures.

It’s been about 5 years since we last went to Madera Canyon, and it’s always a fun spot. The next post will be about our second day on this trip.
