Wichita, June 5 – 10, 2017

Mary Ann and I went to Wichita for a family visit on June 5 to June 10.

We flew out on Allegiant Airlines on Monday morning, June 5 (our anniversary!). Thanks to Alice for driving us to the airport. We came home on Friday via Southwest Airlines, leaving Wichita at about 11:20 am. We stayed at Nancy’s house and used Stan and Teresa’s car (a Camry with 300K+ miles on it) – thanks for that!

We had a family gathering at Nancy’s on Friday night. It was very nice, but I didn’t get any pictures there. I took some ‘goofy’ pictures of Jenny’s kids at the pool. I used my camera’s high speed setting to take pictures at 10 frames per second to get some ‘action’ shots of them jumping off the diving board and landing in the water. Needless to say, that produced a ton of pictures (i.e. at 10 pictures a second and a lot of jumps off the board!), but I picked out a few that the kids might like.

I saw a Baltimore Oriole both at Stan and Teresa’s, and at Nancy’s, but wasn’t able to get a picture. I walked around Stan and Teresa’s neighborhood a little to try to find the Oriole, and got a fleeting shot of what I thought might be a Brown Thrasher. It turns out it was a Yellow-billed Cuckoo, which is a summer resident of Wichita.

Love all the pictures! Cute pics of the kids in the water. Your camera is great at capturing the action shots!….and I had no idea we had yellow-billed cuckoos here for the summer.

Thanks! I wasn’t aware of the Yellow-billed Cuckoo either – this is the first one I’ve seen. They are summer residents in the eastern U.S. from about Kansas east. Maybe you will spot one from your deck now that you’re aware of them. They have a distinct call, so you might hear them rather than see them. You can hear the call here: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Yellow-billed_Cuckoo/sounds
